COMPANY OVERVIEW

Frank J. Smith Jr., Inc. is a professional land surveying company located in Marshalls Creek, Pennsylvania.   The firm was founded in 1976 by Frank J. Smith Jr.  In 1986 Frank incorporated and John R. Rogers became a partner.  Combined, our firm has 73 years experience in the land surveying profession.  Frank and Ray were both responsible for laying out the infrastructure and lots in the Hemlock Farms Community in the 1960’s and 70’s for Western Heritage Properties Limited, while working for other firms.

Frank graduated from Penn State University with an associate degree in engineering majoring in Surveying Technology and is a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Pennsylvania. Frank is a member of the Penn State Alumni Association, The American Congress on Surveying and Mapping, The National Society of Professional Surveyors and the South Pocono Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors. In addition to the principals, the firm boasts 4 CAD (computer aided drafting) technicians, 3 field survey crews, 1 certified land surveyor in training, an additional professional land surveyor licensed in New Jersey, 2 secretarial staff persons, an archiver, and 2 employees in our septic testing and design department.  All of our personnel carry 10 hour OSHA cards and attend weekly in-house safety meetings.

The firm performs various tasks including individual lot surveys, topographical surveys for engineering studies, aerial control surveys, ALTA surveys, bathometric surveys, GPS control surveys, boundary surveys for both small and larger tracks of land. These surveys are performed for both residential and commercial construction layout.  Minor and major subdivisions plans are prepared and presented to municipalities routinely. Our firm utilizes the latest in GPS technology, Trimble Models #R-8 and #R-6, with a base station at our office in Marshalls Creek, which is part of the KeyNet GPS network.  We also utilize conventional instrumentation, i.e.:  Nikon DTM 532 Total Stations, NPL352 Prismless Total Stations,  Nikon, Wild NA-2 and Pentax Automatic Levels, and Trimble TSC2 Data Collectors. Our CAD-Technicians use the MicroSurvey Computer Aided Drafting computer software.  We also employ the use of a fleet of three ATVs when needed and a John Deere 110 Backhoe which is used for on-site soils testing.

The septic testing and design department performs test pits, percolation tests, and septic designs both for new construction and malfunctioning systems. We also specialize in the preparation of Land Planning Modules.  We are experienced in performing hydro conductivity testing.  Both employees in our septic testing and design department are licensed Sewage Enforcement Officers in the State of Pennsylvania and attend continuing education seminars yearly.

Our clients range from individuals, contractors, business, and conservation groups.  In the last four years, we have surveyed over 10,000 Acres for natural land conservation in Monroe, Pike, Carbon, Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties.  We are also well versed in construction layout services ranging from residential developments to large commercial projects, working with some of the nations’ largest construction companies. We have recently completed the steel layout for a new casino in the Poconos, as well as a sewage treatment plant and miles of gray water delivery lines with hundreds of sprinkler heads making up a spray irrigation system for a major drug company in the Poconos.  Some of our clients include, Jacobs Engineering Group, Skanska USA Building Inc., Lane Construction, Wyndham Vacation Ownership, Resorts USA., Inc., Shawnee Development, Inc., The Natural Lands Trust, Pocono Heritage Land Trust (www.phlt.org/), The Nature Conservancy (tnc.org), The Conservation Fund (www.conservationfund.org) and the Keystone Conservation Trust (www.keystonconservation.org).  Presently, our firm is staking miles of natural gas pipeline in Bradford and Tioga Counties in Pennsylvania in conjunction with Hanover Engineering.

Most of our work is based in the Poconos, however we have traveled to New Jersey, New York, New England, and various parts of Pennsylvania to work on several different types of survey projects.
